I have the Merlin App, too. I love it. I often hear but don't always see what is making the sounds around me. Lately, it has been the Red Winged Blackbirds and Robins.
Thanks for taking me back to rainy March evenings with the smells of rotting leaf litter. In the city, I know its spring when the cardinal sings and when he doesn’t its still winter. Not keeping score but it feels like winter is reluctant to give it up. Peep on, peepers.
Love this post. When I moved to Boston back in 1996, one of the most magical first impressions I had was the first time I heard spring peepers. What a chorus! It fills my heart with so much joy when I have moments outside of the city where I can hear them.
Very glad to hear it. I was wondering if the cardinal was more optimistic or amorous than the robins. Cardinal likes our feeder more than the robins do. They may be crooning over worms elsewhere. Whatever, he brightens my day.
Beautiful post, Pinkletink!

I LOVE the robin’s melodic song, and the squeaky hinge call of the redwing blackbird—wonderful signs of spring!

I always thought it was the Robins singing before dawn that signaled spring to me, but this year I noticed the cardinals a month before the robins!

Thank you for “telling about it.” It gave me so much more insight into the beings I’ve heard without enough wonder before!

I love this memory! They bring me back to Vermont, where my friend who grew up in the country first named them for me.
The perfect adventure!
It really was, and just a 10-min drive from my apartment!
